What are the dates of the Heroic or Homeric Period?

The dates of the Heroic or Homeric Period capture the era of the oldest Greek epic tradition and the Bronze Age hero myths behind the Homeric poems. This time is placed roughly from 1200 BCE, around the collapse of Mycenaean palatial centers, up to about 800 BCE, when Greek society was moving into the Archaic period but the stories about Bronze Age heroes remained central in oral tradition. So 1200–800 BCE best matches when these legendary tales were formed and passed down before the more historical, written record of later periods begins. The other ranges sit later in history, outside the world of Homeric epic and its Bronze Age setting.
